We bring these commitments to life through three core behaviors: ownership and collaboration, trust through outcomes and impact, and a challenge culture with ongoing feedback. Ready to make an impact at the company pioneering security transformation in the AI era? Join us at Zscaler.
Role
We are looking for a Principal Engineer, Vulnerability & Exposure Management to join our team. This is a hybrid role, reporting to the Senior Manager, Information Security Engineering in the Product Security department.
This critical role helps modernize how exposure is discovered, prioritized, and reduced across our cloud, infrastructure, applications, APIs, endpoints, containers, and internet-facing assets. As an individual contributor, you will own our external attack surface management (EASM) technology, set the technical direction for the team, and engineer resilient systems that automate exposure identification, routing, and verified remediation.
What you’ll do (Role Expectations)
- Own EASM end to end: discovering internet-facing assets, mapping each to its owner, confirming what is exploitable, routing findings to owners and the SOC, and verifying closure with evidence
- Design and build the system behind the program: ingestion, enrichment, storage, ticketing and reconciliation, running daily and alerting when something fails
- Build risk-based prioritization that goes beyond standard CVSS, using exploitability, threat intelligence, runtime exposure and business context
- Set the technical direction for the team: what to build or fix next across scanning, exposure and automation, why, and the plan to get there, while mentoring engineers and raising the team's technical bar
- Drive remediation across engineering, IT, cloud security and the SOC, turn gaps that nobody owns into a named route, and report exposure trends to leadership
Who You Are (Success Profile)
- You thrive in ambiguity. You're comfortable building the path as you walk it. You thrive in a dynamic environment, seeing ambiguity not as a hindrance, but as the raw material to build something meaningful.
- You act like an owner. Your passion for the mission fuels your bias for action. You operate with integrity because you genuinely care about the outcome. True ownership involves leveraging dynamic range: the ability to navigate seamlessly between high-level strategy and hands-on execution.
- You are a problem-solver. You love running towards the challenges because you are laser-focused on finding the solution, knowing that solving the hard problems delivers the biggest impact.
- You are a high-trust collaborator. You are ambitious for the team, not just yourself. You embrace our challenge culture by giving and receiving ongoing feedback—knowing that candor delivered with clarity and respect is the truest form of teamwork and the fastest way to earn trust.
- You are a learner. You have a true growth mindset and are obsessed with your own development, actively seeking feedback to become a better partner and a stronger teammate. You love what you do and you do it with purpose.
What We’re Looking for (Minimum Qualifications)
- Foundational understanding of AI/ML technologies and experience leveraging, securing, or positioning AI-driven solutions to optimize outcomes within your functional domain
- 12+ years of experience in software or security engineering, including at least 8 years in security
- You have designed and built a security platform or system end to end and driven its adoption across teams to measurable results. You write and debug code yourself (Python, APIs, data pipelines). AI-assisted coding is welcome, as long as you can explain and debug what you ship
- Deep understanding of how attacks and discovery work. You can explain how a vulnerability is exploited from input to impact, and how authenticated and unauthenticated scanning, coverage gaps and asset correlation work
- You have set technical direction for a team, grown engineers, and explained exposure risk and trade-offs to senior leadership
What Will Make You Stand Out (Preferred Qualifications)
- Experience leveraging AI/ML technologies and advanced orchestration platforms to design intelligent, self-service triage, automated remediation routing, and predictive exposure analysis workflows
- Hands-on experience with EASM, CTEM or attack-path analysis, and with tools such as Tenable, Qualys, Wiz, CrowdStrike or Burp Suite
- Cloud network exposure across AWS, Azure and GCP, Kubernetes and container security, and experience at large scale (millions of assets, short-lived cloud resources)
